A strategy is never supposed to be a self-fulfilling prophecy - don't hold on to it until you're dead. Instead, follow the path of life, adjust your strategy to unexpected circumstances.

The purpose of a strategy is to allow you reflect upon important challenges, to formulate reasons why you changed an aspect of your strategy. A marketing strategy helps you cope with business consequences by thoroughly reformulating the strategy as well as discussing it with and communicating it to your business environment (partners, employees, VCs, customers, ...).

Don't neglect the need for a marketing strategy, but keep in mind that execution should roughly make up for 90% of your time.

Make sure you read general as well as software-specific business books. They help you a lot to learn how others did it and mistakes you should avoid.
