I see Microsoft as a strict business company. Term like "to live in peaceful coexistence and cooperation with Open Source" don't match with that company. Thats just political use of tactics against the growing power of OSS. All they want are additional sales channels/customers for their product licenses. Thats it in my humble opinion. Or did I miss the point that they give away their licenses for free now? ;-)

"Let’s give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt."

Why? I, for one, can see absolutely no reason to do that. And the way Microsoft handled the adoption of OOXML standard is yet another example that this company cannot be trusted.

Using your analogy, to be able to trust the country, people need to see some a regime change, not some businessmen trying to convince them that everything is all right now. So Sam Ramji's platitudes like “Open Source is here to stay” aren't going to change anything. I guess what I'm trying to say is that so far nothing is changed in Microsoft attitude towards Open Source except the rhetoric, which is not enough.

Now, I need my morning coffee, before I get too grumpy. :-)
